The 1870 census documents Azra's family: The 1870 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, page 232A, dated July 28, 1870 records Asry T. Gomer (7 - VA) living with his parents Thomas (49 - VA) and Mary J. (36 - VA) Gomer and siblings Margaret A. (13), John W. (11), William B. (10), Edwin (6), and Not Named (4). The family is living with the head of household, Elizabeth Turlington (78 - VA). She has real estate valued at $350 and a personal estate valued at $400. It is likly that Elizabeth Turlington is Mary J. Gomer's mother; so a look at earlier census records confirms this suspicion ... see below.

The 1850 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, page 169B, dated Sept 17, 1850 records Levin (65 - Nansd Co.) and Elizabeth (55 - Nansd Co.) Turlington with their daughter, Mary J. Turlington (19 - Nansd Co.). They are farmers and have real estate valued at $400.
Note: Levin Turlington applied for a pension for his service to the nation during the war of 1812 with Capt W. Smith, VA Militia.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, Suffolk P. O., page 620, dated July 27, 1860 records Elizabeth Turlington (64 - VA) living with her daughter Mary J. Gomer (24 - VA) and her husband Thomas Gomer (38 - VA). Also in the household are Thomas and Mary's children Margaret (4) and John (1). They have real estate valued at $250 and a personal estate valued at $250.

The 1880 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., VA, District 54, page 93B, dated June 17, 1880 records Azara Thos Gomer (17 - VA) living with his parents Thos (55 - VA) and Mary J. (45 - VA) Gomer and siblings Jno (21), Wm B. (19), Edwin (16), Jas H. (13), and Mary E. (7). Also in the household is Elizabeth Hamilton (85 - VA). Elizabeth is listed ass "Grand Mother" and is most likely Mary's mother, Elizabeth Turlington.

Azra married Martha P. Daughtry, daughter of Riddick D. Daughtry and Margaret Elinor (Eleanor) L. Daughtrey, circa 1885 in Virginia. (Martha P. Daughtry was born about 1864 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. and died circa 1920 in Nansemond Co., VA.)
