The 1850 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC, page 28B, dated August 28, 1850 records Thomas Pearce (25 - NC) with his mother, Mima Pearce (64 - NC) and sister, Mary Pearce (23). Also in the household is Kinchen Pearce (65 - VA). This is a farming family with real estate valued at $300. Next door is Thomas' brother, Isaac Pearce (39) with his wife Louisa (28) and children James (13), Rebecca (11), Mary (9), Isaac (5), and Sarah (2).

By 1860 it appears that Isaac and Louisa Pearce as well as Mim Pearce have passed and Thomas Pearce along with several of his neices and nephews are living with Barnes Goodman and family:
The 1860 Federal Census for Haslett District, Gates Co., North Carolina, Gatesville P. O., page 124B, dated June 1, 1860 records Barnes Goodman (60 - NC) with his wife Harriet (55 - NC) and children Wm (31 - NC), John (26 - NC), James (21 - NC). Barnes is a farmer and has real estate valued at $300 [probably $3,000] and a personal estate valued at $25,000. Also in the household are Adline Porter (20), Ann Pearce (18), Lucy Pearce (16), Isaac Pearce (13), Sarah Pearce (12), Virginia Pearce (9), Martha Pearce (3), and Thomas Pearce (39). Barnes has 35 slaves registered in the 1860 slave schedule for Gates County.

Thomas married Annie Mary Matthews, daughter of William E. Matthews and Matilda Jane Howell. (Annie Mary Matthews was born in Jan 1848 in Gates Co., N.C. and died after 1930 in Nansemond Co., VA.)
