Frederick J. Lewis, 92, died on July 11, 2011 in Warrenton, VA twelve days before his 93rd birthday.
He saved lives; as a student in Austin, TX as a lifeguard, as a naval officer during World War II in Tunisia and Sicily protecting American ships from enemy mines, as a director of personnel protection at the Naval Medical Field Laboratory at Camp Lejeune developing three parts of body armor for modern warfare which was tested in Korea and reduced casualties by 50%. At the Naval Medical Center Bethesda he developed the atomic /biological chemical (ABC) shelter for use by the general public in 1961-62. In civil service at the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, he authored standards for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and coordinated nationwide ambulance design, EMS personnel training and promoted 911 as a nationwide call and the use of military helicopters in highway evacuation (MAST).
His first wife, Emma Elizabeth Reid, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Pinkau-Lewis, two children from his first marriage; Victoria Marie Lewis and her husband, Frank Simeone of San Francisco, CA and Paul F. Lewis and his wife, Susan of Felton, DE. He also leaves a sister-in-law, Christine Eisenberg and husband, Peter of Berlin, Germany, brother-in-law Klaus Pinkau and wife Ursula of Munich, Germany and twelve nieces and nephews in Germany.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, July 14 at 10:30 AM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment Quantico National Cemetery with honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's 271 Winchester St. Warrenton, VA 20186, the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia, 9535 Linton Hall Road, Bristow, VA 20126-1222 or to St. Edwards University, 3001 South Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704-6489.
