James is a farmer with real estate valued at $1,500 and owns 1 female slave who is 15 years old.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, page 600 records James M. (40) and Catherine (40) West with children Margaret (15), Lucy (8), and James (5). The value of his real estate is not listed and the value of his personal property is $250. Also in the household are 5 blacks: Rose (40) and Isama (17) Copeland as well as Mary Benton (25), Margaret Benton (30), and Sarah Benton (4).

James married Catherine Holland, daughter of John David Holland and Betsy (Elizabeth) Daughtrey. (Catherine Holland was born about 1816 in Nansemond Co, VA. and died after 1860 in Nansemond Co, VA.)
