Jacob E. Shirk

See general notes on his father, Jacob Shirk, regarding the family story found in The Shirk Family History by Henry Yocom Shirk written in 1914, page 75 through 82. The passage on Jacob (page 80) tells of his younger days when he joined the U. S. Navy in 1852. Jacob was a part of the expedition to Japan headed by Commodore Perry in order to open trade.

The 1880 Federal Census for Seely, Faribault Co., Minnesota, District 55, page 54A records Jacob (50 - PA/PA/PA) and Catherine (39 - PA/PA/PA) Shirk with children Jefferson (20 - Minnesota), Lorlett L. (18 - Minnesota), Mary E. (16 - Minnesota), Nora G. (14 - Minnesota), Simon S. (13 - Minnesota), Arminta (11 - Minnesota), Leh N. (8 - Minnesota), David (6 - Minnesota), and Jacob (4 - Minnesota).

The 1900 Federal Census for Bricelyn Village, Seely, Faribault Co., Minnesota, District 95, page 195A records the widow Katherine Shirk (Sept 1841 - PA/PA/PA) with children Hulda (Dec 1885), George (March 1886), and Theodore (May 1879). Katherine indicates that she has had 16 children of whom 12 are still living.

Jacob married Catherine. (Catherine was born on 16 Sep 1840 in Pennsylvania and died on 10 May 1909 in Bricelyn Village, Seely, Faribault Co., Minnesota.)
