bullet  General Notes:

Poet Garret refers to George Washington Lemons as "Wash" in his 1909 letter:
Uncle Dick Sims killed himself drinking and Uncle Jim did too and no doubt but what Uncle Jesse would have killed himself too had he staid in that old country but after coming to this country [Missouri] he quit and did fine until his wife left him and his family and Uncle Wash Lemons's family got to intermarrying and all fell out and broke up. Bob Sims you know married Betty (Betsy) Jane Lemons [a daughter of Wash & Nancy Lemons ... see 1850 census facts in notes under George Washing ton Lemons] and Ann Sims [this is probably Ann Lemons, Betsey Jane Lemons' sister] you know never married but has children both black and white. I did not see Ann while there the last time and did not want to but did see Betsy Jane and if you want to know just how your old Grandma Garrett looked in her last days go to see Bob Sims's wife ... see general notes for Powhatan Garrett for the entire letter.

See general notes on her sister, Elizabeth (Betsey Jane) Lemons, for 1880 census facts.

The 1900 Federal Census for Mayo Township, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, District 76, page 119B, dated June 15, 1900 records Ann Lemons (March 1832 - NC/NC/NC) with her daughter, Susan Lemons (April 1854 - NC/NC/NC) and grand children Charlie Lemons (Aug 1883 - NC/NC/NC) and Dade Lemons (June 1884 - NC/NC/NC). Both Ann & Susan indicate they are single and Ann reports having had 4 children of whom 3 are still living while Susan indicates she has had 2 children both of whom are still living. It should be noted that Charlie is listed as White while Dade is listed as Black which is consistent with Poet's letter listed above this record.

The 1910 Federal Census for Mayo Township, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, District 159, page 152B, dated April 18, 1910 records Annie Lemons (75 - NC/NC/NC) with her daughter, Susan L. Lemons (52 - NC/NC/NC). Both Ann & Susan indicate they are single and Ann reports having had 3 children all of whom are still living. Both Annie and Susan report their occupation as Washerwoman.
