Sarah (Sally) Sims

  General Notes:

In a 1906 letter to his nephew Jimmie P. Garrett, Poet (Powhatan) Garrett writes that Aunt Sallie "married a rat and the poor old fellow got drunk and froze to death while we were in that country [Rockingham Co., N.C.] in the winter of 1853-54.
I do not know how long Aunt Sallie lived after that but the poor old lady saw no peace during Sneed's life though they lived together a long, long time. I do remember that before we left that country [leaving Rockingham Co., N.C. for Missouri] in the fall of 1843 that poor old Aunt Sallie would come to our house begging for meat and the poor woman would take a large side of bacon on her back and take it home several miles. Poor old Aunt Sallie was a good woman but had no man to help her raise her family; therefore she had to beg."

The 1830 Federal Census for Rockingham Co., NC records Thomas Sneed (30-40) as head of household. Also in the household is a female (20-30) [Sally Wall] and 1 male and 3 female children under 10 years of age. Thomas and Sally Sneed are living next door to Sally's parents, Thomas (70-80) and Amy (60-70) [Wall] Sims.

The 1840 Federal Census for Rockingham Co., NC records Thomas H. Sneed (40-50) as head of household. Also in the household is a female (30-40) [Sally Sims] and 10 other individuals.

The 1850 Federal Census for the Western Division, Rockingham Co., NC, page 66A, dated August 27, 1850 records Thomas H. Sneed (55 - NC) with his wife Sarah Sneed (45 - NC) and children Martha A. Sneed (21 - NC), Susan Sneed (17 - NC), and James Sneed (13 - NC). Thomas is a farmer with real estate valued at $700.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Northern Division, Rockingham Co., NC, Eagle Falls P. O., page 122A, dated July 26, 1860 records Sallie Sneed (57 - NC), Martha Sneed (29 - NC), Susan Sneed (25 - NC), James Sneed (22 - NC), and William Sneed (20) living in the home of Thomas (59) and Francis (59) Pratt and family. Sallie has real estate valued at $700 and a personal estate valued at $240 while Thomas Pratt has real estate valued at $6,000 and a personal estate valued at $3,013.

The 1870 Federal Census for Mayo Township, Rockingham Co., NC, Stonesville P. O., page 295A, dated August 17, 1870 records Sallie Sneed (65 - NC), Martha A. Sneed (40 - NC), Susan Sneed (35 - NC), and James C. Sneed (30 - NC). Sallie has real estate valued at $700 and a personal estate valued at $100. Also in the household is Martha Roberts (20 - NC).

The 1880 Federal Census for Mayo Township, Rockingham Co., NC, District 228, page 46A, dated June 23, 1880 records J. C. Sneed [James C. Sneed] (43 - NC) and his sister, M. A. Sneed [Martha A. Sneed] (50 - NC). Sallie is not listed in the census and has most likely died.

Sarah married Thomas H. Sneed. (Thomas H. Sneed was born circa 1795 and died about 1854 in Rockingham Co, NC.)
