The WWI Draft Registration Card for Ernest Laban Slack dated June 5, 1917 indicates he was tall, medium build with dark hair and blue eyes. He was working as a carpenter at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddyston, Pa. He lists his home address as Seagrove, Randolph Co., N.C. and his place of birth as Pisgah, N.C.

The 1920 U.S. Census, Ohio, Summit Co., Akron, ED# 171 records Ernest L. Slack boarding at 416 Allyn Street and employed as a Factory Worker in a Rubber Co.

The 1930 Federal Census records the Ernest Slack family living in Bath Township of Beaufort County, North Carolina. Margaret's brother, Graham Carter (24), is living with the family.
