bullet  General Notes:

Possible parents for Scott Graybill are Jacob and Elizabeth Graybill. That family is living in Spring Township, Perry Co., PA in 1880, the only Graybill family recorded. Also, the WWI Draft Registratin Card (see below) records Scott's place of birth as Shermansdale which is located in Spring Township. The 1880 Federal Census for Spring Township, Perry Co., PA, District 126 records Jacob (37 - Carpenter) and Elizabeth (36) Graybill with children Catherine (12), Mary A. (11), Margaret S. (8), Sarah A. (6), and Emma M. (4). All family members are born in PA. It is of interest that the 1870 census for Spring Township, Perry Co., PA., New Bloomfield P.O. records Jacob (34) and Elizabeth (25) Graybill with children Catherine (3) and Mary A. (1), which brings Jacob's date of birth from the 1880 census into question. The 1860 Federal Census for Miller Township, Perry Co., PA records Marcus Grabill (sic) (50) with Susannah (35), Jacob (23), John (21), Mary (19), Edward (16), Franklin (14), Margaret (12), Anna (8), and Charles (1). This is a good candidate for the family of Jacob Graybill, but that will be left for another day ... well ... might as well ... the 1850 Federal Census for Penn Township, Perry Co., PA records Marcus Graybill (40 - PA) with children George W. (17), Jacob (13), John M. (11), Mary A. (9), Edgar S. (6), and Margaret (3). There is a Marcus Graybill (1) living with another family nearby (Bernard (or Barney) & Ann Graiff (or Graff)) ... I suspect that the wife died in child birth and by 1860 Marcus has remarried.

The 1900 Federal Census (ED#42, page 203B) records Scott Graybill (September 1886 - pupil) living in the Soldiers Orphan Industrial School in Greene Township, Franklin Co., Pa.

The 1910 Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Cumberland Co., 2nd Ward, Mechanicsburg, District 33, page 16B records Scott M. Graybill (23), wife Lucy C. (22) and children Ethale [Ethel] M. (4), Winfield S. (2), and George E. (11/12) living at 104 Locust Street. (see notes on son Winfield Scott Graybill, Jr.) Scott's first name is Winfield and the M. (1910 census) and H. (1930 census) initials from the census records are bogus.

The WWI Draft Card for Winfield Scott Graybill taken June 5, 1917 records his date of birth as September 13, 1886 at Shermansdale, [Perry Co.,] PA. He is living with his wife and three children at 32 West Green Street in Mechanicsburg, PA. He is employed at D. Wiles Manufacturing Co. in Drop Forge Work. His physical description is medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair.

1920 Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Cumberland Co., Mechanicsburg, ED# 25, page 49A records Winfield S. (33) and Lucia C. (32) Greybill renting a home at 32 West Green Street with children Ethel M. (13), George E. (10), and Verna E. (1 3/12).

The 1930 Federal Census for Mechanicsburg, Pa. Dist 26 records the H. Scott Graybill family renting a home at 214 West Allen Street with children Ethel M. (24), George E. (20), Verna E. (11), and David R. (9). The family is living a few blocks away from Lucy's brother John W. Keil and his family living at 44 West Allen Street.

The 1940 Federal Census for Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Co., PA, Dist 21-33, page 532B, dated April 9, 1940 records the W. Scott Graybill (53 - PA) and Lucy C. Graybill (52 - PA) with children George E. (30), Verna E. (21), and D. Richard (19) renting a home at 229 West Locust Street for $14 / month. Scott, Verna, and Richard have completed 4 years of high school while Lucy and George have completed 8 years of grade school. Scott is employed as a Foreman at a Drop Forge earning $650 working 26 weeks during the last year. George is employed as a Laborer at a Drop Forge earning $400 working 26 weeks during the last year. Verna and Richard are employed respectively as Coners at a Silk Mill earning $240 working 20 weeks during the last year and earning $400 working 30 weeks during the last year.

The WWII Draft Registration Card (for men born on or after April 28, 1877 and on or before February 16, 1897) for Winfield Scott Graybill dated February 27, 1942 lists his date of birth as September 13, 1886 in Perry Co., PA. He is living with his wife, Lucy, 229 West Locust Street in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Co., PA. He is working for D. Wilcox & Co. of Mechanicsburg and his physical description is 5' 10", 165 lbs with brown eyes, brown hair and light complexion. He signs his card as W. Scott Graybill.

The Social Security Death Index lists the date of birth for Winfield Graybill as Sept. 13, 1886 and death as Oct 1975 in Clementon, Camden, New Jersey and issued in PA. This, with the WWI Draft Registration Card, indicate the connection for this record with our Scott Graybill.
