The 1850 Federal Census for Northumberland Co., Virginia, District 7, page 341 records John [Jehu] (22-Sailor) Haynie and Landes Haynie (18-Sailor) living in the home of John (44) and Elizabeth (40) Haynie. It appears that John [Jehu] and Landis are brothers whose parents have died and are staying with an uncle. Jehu later has a son named Lanius.
Jehu Haynie is often indexed as John, however, his name appears to actually be "Jehu" when looking at the actual documents. There are no Civil War records for Jehu Haynie but John does appear in the records of the 40th Virginia Infantry. Except for Benedict Haynie, John is the only Haynie in the 40th that does not desert.
The 1860 Federal Census for Northumberland Co., Virginia, Burgess Store P. O., page 863, dated July 21, 1860 records John [Jehu] (34-Sailor) Haynie with his wife Elizabeth (24) and daughter Anna (2) living with his father-in-law William D. Berry (49-Overseer) and wife Ann Berry (49) and their children Eliza (19), Margaret (16), Alice (13), and Ida (3).
The 1870 Federal Census for Northumberland Co., Virginia, Burgess Store P. O., page 17B, Aug 23, 1870 records Jehu (indexed as John at ancestry.com) (40-Sailor) and Betsy (30) Haynie with children Annie (12), Jehu (10), Andrew (8), Mary B. (4), and Thomas (2).
See general notes on his son John Henry Haynie for 1880 and 1900 census facts.
If census records are correct, William J. is probably William Andrew Jackson Haynie and James Henry Haynie is James Thomas Henry Haynie.
Jehu married Elizabeth Berry, daughter of William D. Berry and Christianna (Ann) Webb. (Elizabeth Berry was born circa 1836 in Northumberland Co., VA, died in 1894 in Northumberland Co., VA. and was buried in Roseland Cemetery, Reedville, Northumberland Co., VA.)
