Interesting to note that the "of Knight" appears for Free Colored Persons and are both females with children.

The 1850 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC page 30B/31A records the farmer Dempsey (75 - NC) and his wife Esther (54 - NC) Knight with children John A. (21 - Wheel Maker), Thomas J. (18), William W. (17), and Hester Ann (12). Also in the household are Martha (42), Robert H. (5), and Lenard M. (1) Knight and Elizabeth Ellis (61), Esther Boyace (76), and William Knight (13).
