Possible parents of Joseph R. Roberts: The 1850 Federal Census for Woolwich Township, Gloucester Co., New Jersey, page 167A records Thomas (37 - NJ) and Mary (27 - NJ) Roberts with children Sarah Jane (8 - NJ), Margaret (4 - NJ), Benjamin (2 - NJ), and Joseph R. (1 - NJ). Thomas is a laborer with real estate valued at $400.

Apparently, by 1860, Thomas and Mary Roberts have died and their children, Sarah Jane, Benjamin and Joseph, have been farmed out (Margaret can not be found in the census record either):

The 1860 Federal Census for Woolwich Township, Gloucester Co., New Jersey, Swedesboro P. O., page 406 records Joseph Roberts (11 - NJ) living on the farm of Joseph (38 - NJ) and Emily (40 - NJ) Capaley. Joseph Capaley has real estate valued at $5,630 and a personal estate valued at $800.
The 1860 Federal Census for Woolwich Township, Gloucester Co., New Jersey, Swedesboro P. O., page 429 records Benjamin Roberts (14 - NJ) living on the farm of Caleb (43 - NJ) and Deborah (36 - NJ) Kirby. Caleb has real estate valued at $10,000 and a personal estate valued at $1,500.

Joseph married Josephine Floyd circa 1877. (Josephine Floyd was born in Mar 1861 in New Jersey and died after 1920 in Penns Grove Burough, Salem Co., New Jersey.)
