John Pomfret (Pomfrett) appears in the 1782 Taxes of King William County. He was taxed for having 275 acres. By June 1, 1787, he had moved to Granville County, North Carolina as on that date there is an entry in the Hanvover County Deed Book, p. 366-367, "I, John Pomfrett, of Granvil Co., State of North Carolinia, do appoint Christopher Tompkins of King William Co., State of Va., my lawfull attorney." The witnesses were Ambrose Edwards and John Blackwell. It was proved Dec 3, 1789 by the oath of Abrose Edwards and recorded.
The 1786 Colonial Census for North Carolina records a John Pomfret living in the County Line District of Granville Co., N. C. The inhabitants listed here include: . WM 21 - 60 yrs, 1 WM under 21 & above 60, 3 WF all ages, 8 Blacks 12 - 50, 4 Blacks under 12 & above 50. Next to John Pomfret is probale son-in-law John Blackwell: 1 WM 21 - 60 yrs, 5 WM under 21 & above 60, 3 WF all ages, 6 Blacks 12 - 50, 3 Blacks under 12 & above 50.
