Charles is a General Blacksmith while Robert works in a Hardware Store. Robert soon marry Susan A. The 1870 Federal Census for Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., New York, District 44, page 128A, dated June 1, 1870 records Robert James (20 - NY) living with his widowed mother Adeline [Bosstley ... see marriage notes for Robert James] James (46 - NY) and siblings Orton (22), Gilbert (17), Adelbert (15), and Flora (5). Adeline is keeping house on her farm and she has real estate valued at $22,760 and a personal estate of $3,000.

The 1860 Federal Census for The Town of Cherry Creek, Chautauqua Co., New York, page 153, dated July 24, 1860 records Robert James (10 - NY) living with his parents Gilbert (37 - NY) and Adeline [Bosstley ... see marriage notes for Robert James] James (36 - NY) and siblings Orton (12), Gilbert (8), Albert (4). Gilbert is a farmer and he has real estate valued at $6,000 and a personal estate of $2,000. Alson in the household are Betsey James (60 - Vermont), Hannah P. Stone (26 - NY / Button Maker), Byrun Eastman (19 - Ny / Farm Laborer), and Lewis James (18 - NY / Farm Laborer). Near by is Lewis James (37 - NY) and his wife Ruth (38 - NY) and their children as well as a Margaret James (70 - RI). Lewis is probably Gilbert's brother.

Robert married Susan Adelle De Laney, daughter of Jonathan (John) De Laney and Mary Etta Howard, on 10 Jun 1882 in Chatauqua Co., New York. (Susan Adelle De Laney was born on 21 Apr 1855 in Cherry Creek, Chatauqua Co., N. Y, died on 25 May 1888 in Cherry Creek, Chatauqua Co., N. Y. and was buried in Cherry Creek Cemetery, Chatauqua Co., N. Y..)
