William Smothers enlisted in the Confederacy, Rockingham Co., NC, 27 Feb. 1862, as a Private age 30. Served NC in E. Co. 45th Inf. Reg. died disease POW at Point Lookout, MD. on 19 April 1865 (died inflammation on the lungs). NC Troops 1861-65, A Roster.
According to the 1860 Census Rockingham Co., NC, family number 9, a Wm C Smothers was living with EC Smothers age 21, both born in NC. William C Smithers married Elizabeth C. Woodcock in New Hanover, NC on 10 Aug 1858.
There was an Elizabeth C Smothers who married George W. Wrenn, 24 Nov 1866, Rockingham Co. In the 1870 Census, first born son was named William, he was 7 years old, born before his parents marriage (Could this have been William Smother's son?) In 1900, her birthdate was Aug 1838. On her death certificate in Rockingham, her name was Elizabeth Caroline Woodcock, daughter of Joel Woodcock of New Hanover, NC. George W Wrenn signed the death certificate.
