Mrs. Constance Ogden Smith Bassham, aged 39 years, wife of Charles N. Bassham, died at her residence 844 W. 40th street last night at 7:15 o'clock after a short illness. She was a native of New York City but had been a resident of Norfolk for the past 20 years. She was a daughter of the late Lewis and Mrs. Emma Allen Smith. Surviving her, besides her husband, is a daughter, Miss Constance Shirley Bassham; two sons, Charles N. Jr., and Lewis D. Bassham, all of Norfolk; four sisters, Mrs. C.W. Wilson, of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; Mrs. H.T. Thornhill, of Parsonburg, Md.; Mrs. E.W. Budde, of Yonkers, N.Y.; and Mrs. W.T. Hadley of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; five brothers, Lewis Smith, New York City; Caldwell Smith, of Noroton Heights, Conn.; Theodore B. Smith, of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; Harold Smith, of New York City, and George E. Smith, of Bronxville, N.Y. The body was removed to the Derry Funeral Chapel, Colley and Harrington avenues, pending completion of funeral arrangements.
Constance married Charles Noble Bassham Sr., son of Elijah Charles Bassham and Julia Ann Hardin, circa 1917. (Charles Noble Bassham Sr. was born on 27 Feb 1888 in Tennyson, Warrick Co., Indiana, died on 9 Oct 1959 in Norfolk City, Virginia and was buried on 11 Oct 1959 in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA.) The cause of his death was Carcinoma of Prostate.
