bullet  General Notes:

The 1870 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Virginia page 264A taken August 16, 1870 records James E. (22) and Susan A. (23) Daughtrey with daughter Garrie A. (9/12).

The 1880 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, District 55, page 136A records J. E. (29) and Susanna (29) Daughtrey with children Garra Ann (10), Ida Belle (5), and Sarah Allen (2).

The 1900 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, District 28, page 157A, dated June 14, 1900 records James E. (Sept 1850 - VA/VA/VA) and Clara E. (March 1856 - VA/VA/VA) Daughtrey with children Ida B. (Feb 1878), Elizabeth C. (March 1881), Robert S. (August 1883), Beverly W. (March 1885), and Odius J. (Dec 1887). James and Clara have been married 24 years with 5 children all of whom are living. Comparing census facts indicates that James was married to Susan and had a daughter, Garrie Ann in 1869. It appears that Susan died ca 1871 and James remarried Clara ca 1876. He had 5 children with Clara. The 1880 census naming Susanna as his wife was perhaps a reference to a former wife, the mother of Garrie Ann. The age gap between the children Garrie Ann and Ida Belle is an indication of several years without a wife. However, burial records for Robert Solomon Daughtrey indicate Susan Butler to be his mother. Perhaps the census records naming "Clara" as wife of James is wrong as is the daughter, "Elizabeth C.", who could be Sarah Allen. The 1910 census records James a widow.

The 1910 Federal Census for Holy Neck, Nansemond Co., Virginia, District 13, page 167B records the widower James E. Daughtrey (57). Also in the household are James' widowed daughter, Sarah Bennett (30), with her son Joe J. Bennett (10), as well as James' son, Beverly W. Daughtrey (20). James is still living next door to Allen and Sarah Daughtrey.

By 1920 Beverly W. Daughtrey (34) is married to Lottie (29) and living next to Eley Daughtrey (81), Joshua T. Daughtrey (50), Mathew Daughtrey (63) and Abram Daughtrey (65). Living with Beverly and Lottie his Beverly's widowed sister, Allie Bennett (38 - VA/VA/VA) [Sarah Allen Daughtrey] and her son Joe J. Bennett (18 - VA/NC/VA). The WWI Draft Registration Cards records Joseph James Bennette born June 7, 1900 and have him living with his mother, Sarah Bennette, in Franklin, VA.
