The Reading, Pennsylvania Marriages, 1876-84 records Joseph Walter Graeff married to Mary Elizabeth Wert on August 5, 1884. Researching census records show that the maiden name for Mary is most likely Wertz. The 1870, Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Berks Co., Reading, Ward 9, page 220B records John (37) and Caroline (34) Wertz with children John (10), Ella (7), and Mary (6). This is probably the correct family in that Mary Graeff names her first two daughters the same names as her mother and sister. In addition, Mary Wertz (16) is listed in the 1880 Federal Census, Pennsylvania, Berks Co., Muhlenberg, District 31in the household of John (45) and Carolina (43) Wertz with siblings Ellen (17) and Kate (8).
