O., page 641, dated August 4, 1860 records Stephen (59 - VA) and Matilda (61 - VA) Rawls with children James (20) and John (18). Also in the household are 2 blacks, Sarah Howell (10) and David Watson (8). Stephen is a farmer with real estate valued at $800 and a personal estate valued at $300. Neither Edwin nor Matilda can read & write.
