It is of interest that the census records of 1860 through 1880 record the family name as Mott.

The 1860 Federal Census for Virginia, Pittsylvania Co., North District, Chatham P.O., page 253 taken August 23, 1860 records Charles D. Mott (29-NY) and wife Mary A. Mott (21) with children Anna (2) and John (1). Charles lists his employment as Carriage Maker. Also in the household is Mary's sister, Susan A. Bagby (16).

The 1870 Federal Census for Virginia, Pittsylvania Co., Subdivision North of the Dan River, Chatham P.O., page 327B taken August 10, 1870 records Chas D. Mott (39-NY) and wife Mary A. Mott (32) with children Anna (12), John (10), George (6), Leonard (4), Harry (2), and Eugene (3/12). Charles lists his employment as Carriage Maker.

The 1880 Federal Census for Virginia, Pittsylvania Co., Callands, District 167, page 142A/B records C. D. Mott (48-NY/NY/NY) and wife Mary A. Mott (40) with children John D. (21), George (16), Leonard (14), Harry (12), Eugene (10), Myrtle (6), Kate (3), Oscar (1), and James (Dec 1879). Also in the household are John Johnson (27) and his wife Anna (DeMott) Johnson (23) and their children Charles (3) and Gertrude (1). C. D. (Charles) and John list their employment as a Coach Maker while George assists in the shop. John Johnson is a House Painter.

The 1900 Federal Census for Virginia, Pittsylvania Co., Chatham, District 76, page 8B records Charles D. DeMott (Sept 1831-NY/NY/NY, widower) with children Eugene (May 1872), Katie (Nov 1877), and Myrtle (Dec 1875). Also in the household are Charles' grandchildren: Jack Johnson (Sept 1879), Maria Johnson (Jan 1884), Lillian Johnson (Jan 1886), and Elizabeth Johnson (March 1889). Charles lists his employment as a Carpenter while Eugene is a Brick Layer.

Charles married Mary Angeline Bagby, daughter of Kendrick Mortimore Bagby and Judith A. Toler, on 28 Nov 1855 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. (Mary Angeline Bagby was born on 23 Jun 1839 in Virginia and died on 29 Nov 1897 in Pittsylvania Co., VA..)
