bullet  General Notes:

The 1840 Federal Census for Norfolk Co., VA records D. P. Daughtrey.

The 1850 Federal Census for Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., VA, page 122B dated August 17, 1850 records D. P. Daughtrey (48 - VA) with his wife Elizabeth (35 - VA) and their 7 daughters Olivia (15), Arietta (13), Cornelia (12), Alexina (10), Octavia (8), Irene (6), and Claudia (3). D. P. is a Merchant [family bible records his occupation as Grocer] with real estate valued at $3,000.

The Daughtrey Family Bible archived at the Library of Virginia records that Darien Parker Daughtrey and his wife, Elizabeth, died during to Yellow Fever outbreak in Portsmouth in October 1855. The 1860 census records bare that out in that by 1860 their children are apparently orphans: The 1860 Federal Census for City of Portsmouth, Jackson Ward, VA, page 73 dated July 12, 1860 records Anietta Daughtrey (20), Ella Daughtrey (18), Octavia Daughtrey (15), and Claudia Daughtrey (11) living with their sister Olivia West (23) and her husband John T. West (39) and their children Childe (5/12 - son), Thomas (7), Kate (2), and Eddie (1). John is a Grocer with real estate valued at $1,300 and a personal estate valued at $3,500. One could surmise that John had worked with D. P. Daughtrey and took over the business after his wife's father died.
