The only William Thompson old enough to have been married in 1801 and is listed in the 1840 Tazewell Co., VA census is the person documented below: The 1850 Federal Census for Western District, Tazewell Co., Virginia, page 219A, dated July 6, 1850 records William Thompson (53 - VA) living with the head of household, James B. Thompson (40 - VA). Also in the household are Ed R. Thompson (15), Mary A. Thompson (13), and Archibald Thompson (9). James has real estate valued at $20,800. This is most likely the correct William Thompson because he is living nearby several families in both the 1840 and 1850 census records ... namely Margaret Thompson in both records with 3 daughters and 1 son. William's listed age in 1850, 53, is most likely incorrect in that the 1840 census record his birth year as before 1790. The 1840 Federal Census for Tazewell Co., VA records William Thompson Sr. as head of household: 1 male (50-59), 3 males (20-29), 1 female (50-59), 2 females (15-19), 1 female (10-14), and 14 slaves. Nearby is Col. John Thompson: 1 male (60-69), 1 male (20-29), 1 female (60-69), and 11 slaves, as well as Archd Thompson Sr.: 1 male 70-79), 1 male (50-59), 1 male (40-49), 1 male (30-39), 1 female (30-39), 1 female (under 5), and 21 slaves.
In the 1840 census, nearby to William Thompson is Col. John Thompson: THOMPSON, JOHN, born 27 Feb 1764, Augusta Co., VA, died ca 1852 [?]. He was a son of William Thompson, b 1722 at Ulster, Ireland, who emigrated to Pennsylvania, and in 1744 purchased 229 acres of land on the Clinch River, Morris Knob, Montgomery Co., VA. He served as a Lt. in Captain Breckinridges' Company. He was twice married, names of wives unknown at this time, and resided in Botetourt and Montgomery Cos., VA. Children by his first marriage were John [Pensioner] and Archibald Thompson, and by his second marriage he had James, William and Andrew Thompson.
On 31 Mar 1834 Col. John Thompson applied before William Thompson, a Justice of the Peace at Tazewell Co., VA, giving his age as 70 years on 27 Feb last [being 27 Feb 1764]. He stated that he came from Augusta Co., VA in 1776 to the head of Maiden Springs fork of the Clinch River in what was then Montgomery, now Tazewell Co., VA. In the spring of 1780 he served as Private under Capt. Thomas Mastin.
On 28 Dec 1852 at Tazewell Co., VA, William Thompson of Liberty Hill, deposed that he was the legal heir of John Thompson.
Other data gave his death date as 16 July 1850, and said he was twice married, first to Louise Bowen, and second to Mary Walker.
John married as his first wife ca 1786 Louisa Bowen, daughter of Lt. Reese Bowen and his wife, Levisa/Lucy Smith, who were married ca 1762. She was a daughter of Col. John Smith. Lt.
