Margaret Aileen (THOMPSON) DOUGHTIE, died June 19, 1994, at age 67 after a long and gallant battle with cancer first joined back in 1967 when she was forty years old. Her funeral was private with Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnoca, VA handling the arrangements. Margaret was born November 6, 1926 in Los Angeles, California, the second of two daughters of Allan Kerr THOMPSON and Lenorah Eloise DARROW. She married in 1977, Charles Wilson DOUGHTIE Jr., of Hilton Head, SC, the son of a surgeon, Dr. Charles W. DOUGHTIE Sr. and Alice SMITH. His first wife, Sallie Rogers (COLLINS) DOUGHTIE died September 6, 1986 at age 62 and was buried in Six Oaks Cemetery, Sea Pines Plantation, Beaufort County, South Carolina.
Before her marriage, Margaret was a proofreader and copy editor in New York City. She was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in art history. She had a lifetime love for fine music, and was a thoughtful opponent of bigotry and of race discrimination in any form. Her father, Allan Kerr THOMPSON worked as an engineer on the Hoover Dam project, and her mother, Lenorah (DARROW) THOMPSON was a relative of Clarence DARROW. Mrs. DOUGHTIE lived successively in Hilton Head Island, S.C.; Lexington, VA; Mountain Home, Ark.; Seattle, WA; and Chapel Hill, N.C., with her friend and husband of seventeen years, Charles Wilson DOUGHTIE. He died April 13, 2002 at Hilton Head Island at age 80. Surviving Margaret was a niece, Dr. Laura BEECHER of Port Washington, N.Y.; and a sister, Mrs. Sidney W. (Darcy) GOTTLIEB of Coral Gables, Florida. Margaret's father, Allan, died January 9, 1970 Napa Co.; age 71 and was buried in Saint Helena Public Cemetery, Saint Helena, Napa County, California.
