The 1870 Federal Census for Leatherwood, Henry Co., Virginia, Martinsville P. O., page 69A, dated July 19, 1870 records Lewis (25) and Sarah E. (27) Johnson. Also in the household is Sarah B. Law (9) ... this could be the daughter on Sarah E. [Law] Johnston's brother, Marshall Law, although the age is 10 years off.

The 1880 Federal Census for Leatherwood, Henry Co., Virginia, District 129, page 62A, dated June 11, 1880 records Lewis (35) and Sarah E. (35) Johnston with their children Eliza E. (9), Martelious P. (7), Courcillious O. (4), Ulysses J. (2), and Cornelia O. (8/12 - Sept). Lewis is a Farmer. Next door is Sarah's mother and brother and families.

The 1900 Federal Census for Leatherwood, Henry Co., Virginia, District 52, page 91A, dated June 9, 1900 records William L. (June 1845) and Sarah E. (Aug 1843) Johnson with their children Mary E. (Jan 1870), Cornelia O. (Sept 1879), Maud B. (Sept 1881). Lewis is a Farmer and has been married to Sarah for 36 years. They have had 12 children of whom 6 are still living.

Sarah married William Lewis Johnston on 9 Dec 1866 in Franklin Co., VA. (William Lewis Johnston was born in Jun 1845 in Franklin Co., VA and died after 1900 in Leatherwood, Henry Co., VA.)
