Roxanna Elizabeth (Bettie) Blount
- Born: Abt 1836, Gates Co., North Carolina
- Marriage: Oliver H. Odom
- Died: Abt 1921, Nansemond Co, VA. about age 85
General Notes:
As of 1880, Roxanna Odom, widow, is living in Nansemond Co., Va. with her children, Corine and Richard. They are listed as R. E. Odom (41), daughter Corine B. (18) and son Richard B. (16).
The 1870 Federal Cenus for Mintonsville, Gates Co., N.C. page 74 records Richard B. (32), Oliver (34), Bettie (34), Corinne (9), and Richard (7) Odom. Oliver and Bettie [Roxanna Elizabeth] are husband and wife while Richard B. Odom is Oliver's brother. They have real estate valued at $4,000 and personal property at $100. The outcome of the Civil War has obviously hit them hard ... see notes below for 1860 census facts.
The 1860 Federal Cenus for Mintonsville, Gates Co., N.C. records O. H. (23) and Bettie (22) Odom. O. H. is listed on page 93A and is rather wealthy with real estate valued at $4,500 and personal property at $24,273. R. B. Odom (22) is listed on page 99A living with Elizabeth Bunch (22). R. B. [Richard] has personal property valued at $26,559 with no real estate. Oliver lists ownership of 34 slaves while Richard has 37. It is of interest that on the same page of this census with O. H. [Oliver] Odom is Dolly Hinton (86) next door to John W. (39) and Adaline (27) Hinton. Neither of these Hinton households list real estate nor personal property value, however, the 1860 Slave Schedule lists Dolly with 5 slaves and John W. with 26 slaves. Perhaps Oliver and Richard Odom actually have ownership of all slave holdings.
The 1850 Federal Cenus for Gates Co., N.C. page 51A records Oliver (14) and Richard (12) Odam [Odom] living in the household of John (74) and Doratha (74) Hinton. They are the only Odoms in Gates Co. Also in the household is "overseer" Joseph Norwell (20). It is of interest that Oliver and Richard have real estate valued ar $4,200 each while the Hintons have $1,000 and Norwell $0. Perhaps Oliver and Richard are the children of Hinton's deceased daughter and husband. This census also records Roxanna Bount (13) living in the household of William G. (45) and Elizabeth (36) Daughty.
The 1840 Federal Census for Gates Co., NC lists the household of Elizabeth Odom (40-50). Other household members include a male and female (20-30), probaly Elizabeth's son and his wife, and 2 male children under 5 years, probaly Oliver and Richard, and one female (5-10). Going back to 1830 in Gates Co. one can find a John Odom (20--30) with a female (20--30) and female child (under 5). This could be Elizabeth's husband. Nearby this John Odom is a Mary Odom (50-60). She would be a good candidate for John's mother.
The 1900 Federal Cenuss for Nansemonad Co., Va., Holy Neck District 28 records R. B. Odom (July 1836), single male, living by himself and employed as a merchant. This is most likely Oliver's brother, Richard.
The 1910 and 1920 census records Bettie (Roxanna) living with her son-in-law David Milteer and then grandson-in-law William Phillips. see notes on her son-in-law David Miltier (married to daughter Corine Odom).
Roxanna married Oliver H. Odom. (Oliver H. Odom was born about 1836 in Gates Co, NC and died about 1875.)
