David and family are listed in census records for Isle of Wight Co. back to 1820. The 1830 census records a woman in the family born around 1785 but she is no longer there in the 1840 census.

The 1850 census for Nansemond Co. records David and Sally Roberts and family. There are children ages 28 to 19 with a daughter, Sally A. Roberts, 3 years old. This indicates David had another wife before marrying Sally. David is apparently a rather wealthy famer with some 22 slaves. They have 24 in 1860. His son Lim is living next to him and owns 3 slaves.

The 1860 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., Va. records David Roberts (74) and second wife Sally (50) as a rather wealthy farming family with real estate valued at $3,000 and personal property at $23,200. Also in the household are D. Burwell Roberts (29) and daughters Sally A. (13) and Jane E. Roberts (9).

David married Catharine Eley on 29 Jan 1816 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. (Catharine Eley was born about 1785 in Virginia and died about 1835 in Isle of Wight Co., VA..)

David next married Sally about 1845 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. (Sally was born about 1810 in Virginia and died after 1860.)
