Small and is possibly his mother-in-law.

The 1870 Federal Census for Scott Co., Mississippi records J. C. Denson (45) and wife Harriet (40) with children Thomas (20), S. (16), Jas (14), Austin (12), Jns L. (10), and Alvin (6).
