She graduated Chester High School, Class of 1938, where she was Queen of the May. Martha traveled the world in support of her husband's military career, but she was her absolute happiest in her garden or at the beach. Predeceasing her was her companion, Timex. In addition to her husband, survivors include her sons, Carter Jr. and his wife, Vivian of the Philippines, and David and his wife, Jane of Silver Spring, Md.; and her daughter, Mary and her husband, Fred Sollog of Midlothian. Martha had five much-loved grandchildren, Hopkins Cowan, Virginia and Alex Cowan, and Clarice and Nick Sollog. Siblings, Mabel M. Boyd and Selden "Jim" Mann also survive. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2004 in the chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. Reverend Starke Cauthorn, minister of Covenant Presbyterian Church, will preside. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Heart Association or Covenant Presbyterian Church, 201 Walnut Blvd., Petersburg, Va.
