Elijah McNealy enlisted in Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment Virginia as a Private on 10 March 1862 He deserted on 15 September 1862 (Estimated day) and returned to duty on 29 February 1864. It is recorded that he again deserted Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 07 January 1865.
The 1860 Federal Census for Pittsylvania Co., VA, North District, Museville P. O., page 192 records Elijah McNealey (32) with his wife Sarah (29) and children Eveline (7), Royalt F. (5), and Julia A. E. (2).
The 1870 Federal Census for North of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Va., Chatham P. O., page 271A records Sarah McNealey (40) with her children Eveline (16), Thomas (13), and Cabbell T. (9). No one in the family can read or write.
The 1880 Federal Census for Callands, Pittsylvania Co., Va., District 164, page 57A records the widow Sallie McNealey (52) with her sons Cabell (17), Keen (15), and William D. (13).
Elijah married Sarah (Sally) Kendrick. (Sarah (Sally) Kendrick was born circa 1829 in Virginia and died after 1880 in Pittsylvania Co, VA.)
