The 1880 Federal Census for Hasletts Township, Gates Co., NC, District 57 reocrds James R. Ellis (25 - NC) with his wife Margaret A. (24 - VA) and sons James W. (2 - VA) and Barnes (1 - NC). Next door is Marmaduke Ellis (57 - NC) with his wife Sarah E. (35 - VA) and children Henry H. (18 - VA), Annie M. (16 - NC), Roselie (2 - NC), and Marmaduke (1 - NC). Sarah is obviously a 2nd marriage. Checking earlier census records indicate that Marmaduke Ellis was married to a Roxanna (b ca 1822 - NC). Marmaduke and Rosilla (Sic) are living in Nansemond Co. in 1860 and Gates Co. in 1870.
The 1900 Federal Census for Holy Neck District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 27, page 136A records James R. Ellis (April 1855 - NC/NC/NC) with his wife Margaret A. (Aug 1854) and children Barnes (Jan 1880 - NC), Mary (Aug 1883 - NC), Clara (May 1886 - NC), Clide (sic) (Feb 1889 - NC), Emma (Sept 1891 - NC), and Lloyd (June 1894 - NC). James and Margaret report that they have been married for 22 years and have had 6 children ... what about James?!?
The 1930 Federal Census for Holy Neck District, Nansemond Co., VA, District 8, page 118B records James R. Ellis (74 - NC/NC/NC) with his wife Margaretta (transcribed as) (75), both report being first married age 22.
