ADKINS LEWISVILLE - Jarrell Francis Adkins July 12, 1924 - Feb. 23, 2014
Jarrell Francis Adkins of Lewisville, NC, our dear Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Friend, and member of the "Greatest Generation," passed away on February 23, 2014 due to cardiac arrest after a long battle with kidney failure. "Jeff" was born on July 12, 1924 in Danville, VA and was the son of the late George D. Adkins and Clara B. Shelton Adkins of Henry County, VA, Alexandria, VA, and Palm Harbor, FL. He entered the U.S. Army at an early age and courageously fought and survived "The Battle of the Bulge" in Belgium during World War II, which became the costliest battle in terms of casualties for the United States during the war. He received the most respected "Purple Heart" during his WWII service. His Army service also took him to the Korean War, from which he returned to the Danville/Martinsville, VA area to resume life with his family. In 1952 he moved his family to Alexandria, VA and worked at the Pentagon before he secured a position at the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac (RF&P) Railroad, where he worked as a Supervisor until he retired in the mid-1980s. Jeff had a love of the water and boats and enjoyed his weekends on the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay so much that he retired to the Northern Neck of Virginia where he assisted in building a home for he and Nancy in Mollusk, VA. They enjoyed fishing, crabbing, oyster roasts, and boating on their sailboat with visiting friends and wonderful neighbors. Never weary of seeking new adventures, they lived in Punta Gorda, FL, Charleston, SC, and finally settled in the Winston-Salem area in the mid-90's to be closer to their family and grandchildren. Jeff was a member and a past Chapter President of the Sons of the American Revolution. Preceding Jeff in death were his wife of 60 years and mother of his three children, Nancy G. Adkins, a son, Jarrell F. Adkins, Jr., as well as a sister, Constance R. Adkins, and a brother, Curtis L. Adkins. Surviving him are his wife, Virginia W. Adkins; two daughters, Judith A. Thompson (John B.) and Rebecca A. Adkins; two grandchildren, Jane T. Ciener (Greg) of Winston-Salem and J. Chris Thompson (Suellen) of Kernersville; five great-grandchildren, Caroline, Katharine Jane, and Elizabeth Ciener; and Macy and Blaine Thompson; a brother, Bertrand W. Adkins of VA and FL, and a sister, Barbara A. Wurl of Fairfax, VA. A memorial service for Jeff will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Centenary United Methodist Church in the Chapel with The Rev. Craig Ford officiating. A Military Honor Guard will be in attendance. In lieu of flowers, please send your remembrances of Jeff to aid military families through The Fisher House Foundation, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850. "Have ye not known? have ye not understood from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint." Isaiah 40:21,31
