The 1880 Federal Census for Hartwood Township, Stafford Co., Virginia, page 527A, taken June 17, 1880 records Catherine (40) and Alexander (60 - VA) Brown with children Richard (20), Robert (17), Dudley (13, a son), Thomas (11), Amanda (6), and Mansil (3). Alexander is a farmer with real estate and is the only member of the family that is listed as can not read or write.
