The 1930 Federal Census for Maneys Neck, Hertford Co., North Carolina, District 6, page 205A, dated April 3, 1930 records Jake L. (46 - NC/NC/NC) and Fannie B. (50 - NC/NC/NC) Howell with children Jarvis L. (20), Cyrus D. (19), William B. (17), Robert L. (15), Granville B. (12), Lucy E. (10), and Frances S. (9). Jake is a farmer living along State Highway # 12 and has been married to Fannie for 22 years.
Published in The Virginian Pilot on April 8, 2011 - Frances Daughtrey Frances S. Daughtrey SUFFOLK - Frances Storey Howell Daughtrey, 89, went to be with her Lord April 6, 2011. She was born in Como, N.C. She was the last surviving child of Jake and Fannie Howell. Her husband, E. Hunter Daughtrey, sister Lucy Eure, brothers Jarvis, Cyrus, William, Robert and Granville Howell, and former daughter-in-law Mary Jo Daughtrey predeceased her. Sons, Hunter and wife Janet Parsons of Durham, N.C., Sid and wife Pat Grady Daughtrey of Suffolk survive her. Grandma will be missed by grandchildren, Heather and husband Ted Rabalais of Hillsborough, N.C., and Nathan Daughtrey of Greensboro, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Jessica and Colby Rabalais; and step-grandson, John Douglas of Brooklyn, N.Y. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. Frances was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church in Franklin, where she served as preschool director and Sunday School teacher. She was a member of Beaver Dam's Eager Beavers Senior Adults, Carrsville Homemakers, and Holland Women's Club and served as a Holland 4H Leader. She coordinated the Suffolk Salvation Army Doll and Stocking Program, praying for each doll and the recipient. She was an accomplished cook with an extensive cookbook collection and won numerous cooking contests. One winning recipe was published in Jean Anderson's The American Century Cookbook and Women's Day Magazine. Buckhorn Baptist Church and Como, N.C., held a special place in her heart. The family extends special appreciation to the staff and friends of Hillcrest Retirement Center and Nansemond Pointe for their loving assistance in transitioning our parents. The funeral will be conducted Saturday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Dr. Richard Peerey and the Rev. Charles Anderson officiating. Burial at Beaver Dam Cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service. Frances is mentioned in the obituary of her brother, in the April 25, 2005 edition of the Lynchburg News and Advance: Robert Lee Howell PORTSMOUTH - Robert Lee Howell, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening after a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 20, 1915, in Como, N.C., and was the son of the late Jake L. and Fannie Beale Howell. Mr. Howell was a retired supervisor from T.O. Williams Meat Packing Co. after more than 45 years of service. He was a long time Member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church where he served on the deacon board of the church for more than 50 years and was honored with the title of Deacon "Emeritus". He also was a member of the Men's Bible Class. Mr. Howell for many years was a member of The Woodmen Of The World. Survivors include his loving wife of more than 68 years, Hazel Valeria Howell; three sons, Robert O. "Bob" Howell and wife, Carol, of Suffolk, Joseph E. "Joe" Howell and wife, Patricia Ann, of Palm Bay, Fla., and Donald L. "Don" Howell and wife, Betty W., of Madison Heights, Va.; one sister, Frances Daughtrey and husband, Hunter, of Suffolk; seven grandchildren, Michael S. Howell and wife, Brenda, Jeffrey L. Howell and wife, Patti, Brian J. Howell and wife, Cheri, Christopher L. Howell and wife, Nikki, Timothy L. Howell, Carrie H. Moore and husband, Mike, and Sarah J. Howell; nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday evening at the Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel of Sturtevant Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Port Norfolk Baptist Church. The Rev. Terry Taylor will officiate. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the home of Bob Howell, 1209 Mill Lane Quarter, Suffolk, at other times. Frances married Edward Hunter Daughtrey, son of Jasper Daughtrey and Mary Susan (Susie) Carson, in 1942. (Edward Hunter Daughtrey was born circa 1913 in Carrsville, Nansemond Co, VA, died on 20 Jun 2009 and was buried in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery, Isle of Wight Co., VA.)
