Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) Date: August 20, 2000 James Taylor Jones, born in Mooresville, Alabama, on July 5, 1911, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2000, at age 89 after several years with Alzheimer's disease. Cared for at home through the early years of the disease by Louise, his loving wife of 59 years, and his son Jimmy, Taylor lived at Bayside Healthcare Center in Virginia Beach for past eleven months. Taylor grew up in Collierville, Tennessee, where his father was a cotton buyer in Northern Alabama. He attended Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. In 1937, he began his 39-year career as a salesman for what was then the American Snuff Company, later to become Conwood Company. As a salesman in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, Taylor met his beloved Louise Pritchard while she was attending James Madison University in Harrisonburg. They married in 1941. Two years later, he enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country during World War II, stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Japan. After the war, Taylor returned home to Louise in Norfolk, where they lived for 40 years in Ingleside. They moved to Virginia Beach in 1985. Taylor was a devoted husband and father, an accomplished bridge player, experienced gardener, ardent baseball fan, a loyal member of American Legion Post 204, and a Deacon of Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Louise; son, James Taylor Jones Jr. of Virginia Beach; and daughter, Martha Burnham Jones of Austin, Texas. Taylor was preceded in death by his father, Winston Reese Jones; his mother, Harriett Woodroof Jones; and his sister, Sara Moore McMahan. Following a private family burial at Riverside Memorial Park, a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 20th, in Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be considered to Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church, 770 Ingleside Road, Norfolk, Virginia 23502, or to the Alzheimer's Association, Hampton Roads Chapter, 20 Interstate Corporate Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, Virginia 23502. James married Martha Louise Pritchard, daughter of Joseph Albert Pritchard and Sophia Love Burnham, in 1941.
