James W. Harris
General Notes: James W. Harris enlisted as a Private on February 26, 1863 at the age of 18 in Company F, 45th Infantry Regiment North Carolina (he has enlistment papers recording April 5, 1862 as his initial signing). He was wounded on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA and became a POW on July 5, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. He was confined on July 7, 1863 at Fort Delaware, DE and transferred on October 15, 1863 to Point Lookout, MD. He was then paroled on September 18, 1864 at Point Lookout, MD and exchanged on September 22, 1864 at Varina, VA. He once again became a POW on March 25, 1865 at Petersburg, VA and hospitalized on March 28, 1865 at Washington, DC. After recovering from wounds he is confined on April 17, 1865 at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. He was then transferred on May 11, 1865 to Elmira, NY and took The Oath of Allegiance on July 3, 1865 at Elmira, NY. James married Elvira. (Elvira was born circa 1853 in North Carolina and died after 1880 in Mayo Township, Rockingham Co., N.C..) |
