Obituary for his son, Alfred Mainwaring - Grand Rapids Press - (Apr/12/2011)
Alfred Arthur Mainwaring II, age 83, passed away Friday, April 8, 2011 at Metro Health Hospital after an illness. The longtime Wyoming resident is survived by is beloved wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Anne; and 12 children: Lynn (Theodore) Attila of Watervliet, Shaun (Sharon Benoit) Mainwaring of Rockford, Victor (Laura) Mainwaring II of Twin Lake, Alfred Arthur (Melanie) Mainwaring III of Kingwood, TX, Colleen (Paul) Brooks of Weddington, NC, Shannon (Sherrie) Mainwaring of Coloma, Susan Mainwaring-Chatman of Grand Rapids, Brian (Marcie) Mainwaring of Shelbyville, Kathleen (Kevin) VerSnyder of Lake LeLanau, Erin Mainwaring of Sparta, Sue Cooper of Sparta, Victoria (Tim) Woodward of Colville, WA; 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was the only child of Victor and Mildred (Wood) Mainwaring of Watervliet, Michigan. Mainwaring was retired military with the rank of Master Sergeant. He most proudly served his country for 29 years logging time in the Navy, Air Force and retiring from the Army. Only minutes after turning 16 years of age he began his military journey serving on the USS Missouri, a mine sweeper, during WW II. He also served during Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. Despite the fact he was branded by the government as a 100% service-related disabled veteran, Mainwaring told his family only weeks before his passing he was ready to re-up once again. I figure I will do a desk job, he reasoned. He was a member of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard; VFW Post 702; American Legion Post 154; Disabled American Veteran Chapter 2; Air Force Sergeant Association; 56th Fighter Group Association; 13th Fighter Interceptor Squadron Association; Uniform Serviced Disabled Retirees (USDR); WINGS member (philanthropic link of Air Force Association); Senior Volunteer - Grand Rapids Police Dept.; Senior Volunteer - Wyoming Police Dept.; volunteer advocate for the Victim/Witness Program. Mainwaring held a Bachelor of Arts degree, however, one of his proudest moments was when he received his 1948 Watervliet High School diploma at the age of 77. He went to serve his country at the tender age of 16 missing this milestone in his life. The precious document was presented to him by his granddaughter, Kate Attila-Hyska, a member of the 2002 Watervliet Public Schools Board of Education. Though Mainwaring was accomplished in many aspects of the civilian business world, he was proudest of the transportation company, Mainwaring & Son, Inc, which he founded and ran as its CEO. The business had offices in Grand Rapids and Stevensville. Als life will be celebrated by his family at a private memorial service on Tuesday, April 12 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Belmont, with full military rites to follow the ceremony. Interment will take place at a later date in the historic family plot on Mackinac Island. Memorial donations in Master Sergeant A.A. Mainwarings honor may be made to the Friends of the Michigan Veterans Homes, P.O. Box 805, Grandville, MI 49468-0805.
