The 1850 Federal Census for North Carolina, Rutherford Co., Cathies Creek, page 276 records James (52-NC) and Bethania (55-NC) Martin [Marlow] with children Roberson (21), Benjamin (19), Washington (17), Martha (15), Isaac (13), Sophia (10), and James (21). James is a farmer with real estate values at $600.
The 1860 Federal Census for North Carolina, McDowell Co., Sugar Hill P.O., page 192B records James Marlow (61) with children Isaac (22), Rebeca (27), James M. (26), Elizabeth (25), Emma (3), and Thomas (1). James has real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property at $500 which includes 1 female slave, age 70.
Isaac and Rebecca are husband and wife, as indicated by the 1870 census. The 1870 Federal Census for North Carolina, McDowell Co., Sugar Hill P.O., page 679A records Isaac (32) and Rebecca (35) Marlow with children Sarah J. (10), Bethany (8) (named for his mother), Isaac J. (6), Rufus A. (4), Marietta (2), Martha (1), and Emma (11/12). (The last three children present a problem for their ages, Emma could be Isaac's brother's daughter in that James has not been found after 1860)
Note: Isaac Marlow enlisted as a Private in Company F, 58th Infantry Regiment North Carolina on December 24, 1862 at the age of 24. He was on rolls on January 15, 1863 and was absent, without leave on September 13, 1863. He returned on December 11, 1863 and was on rolls from January 15, 1864 until the end of the war April 15, 1864.
James married Bethania Freeman on 1 Feb 1817 in Rutherford County, NC. (Bethania Freeman was born circa 1795 in North Carolina and died circa 1855 in North Carolina.)
