MILLS LEROY WATKINS-is a native of Isle of Wight county, a son of Meridith Holland Watkins and Jincy (Darden) Watkins. Through the years of the civil war he was in the Confederate States service; first in Company D, 16th Virginia Infantry, and then with the 1st Independent Company, signal corps. In Nansemond County, Virginia, June 18, 1866, Mills L. Watkins and Louisiana Pierce were united in marriage, and in the home established by their union are six children, namely: Jesse L. [ca 1867], Herbert C. [ca 1869], William F. [Floyd - July 1874], Elmira May [May 1876], Ode [a son - ca 1878], and Carrie [May 1874] [also a son after publication, Sherley C. Watkins - April 1887]. The wife of Mr. Watkins was born in Nansemond County, a daughter of William Pierce, sr.', and Elmira (Daniel) Pierce. The father of Mills L. Watkins [Meredith Holland Watkins / Jincy Jane Darden] was a colonel of militia of Isle of Wight County for a number of years, also a justice of the peace for this county. At the beginning of the late war he entered the service as captain of the Isle of Wight Grays, where he served over a year, and was then necessitated to resign on the account of ill health. In 1870 Mills L. Watkins was appointed assessor of land for Isle of Wight county, was in the same year elected county treasurer, in which office he served three years. In 1883 he was elected justice of the peace, and is still serving. Address, Windsor, Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
