The 1860 Federal Census for Franklin, Linn Co., Iowa records Addison Burge (1 - Iowa) living with his parents J. C. (22 - Virginia) and Sarah E. (22 - Ohio) Burge and sister Alice A. Burge (2 - Iowa). J. C. is a farmer.
The 1880 Federal Census for Yount, Napa Co., California, District 75 records Adeson (sic) [Addison] E. Burge (21 - Iowa/VA/Ohio) working on a farm.
Sometime in the early 1880s the family moves to Texas. See general notes on his daughter, Maud, for 1900 census facts where Addison and family are still living in Texas. In a July 6, 2012 email from Addison's great grand daughter Judith Weaver: Mom [Maude Ruth Nyc] would be able to share some info about Nellie. Nellie was her favorite aunt. She would stay with her out at "the ranch" over the summer and the kids would sleep on the floor on sheep skin and carry water for the flowers. My mother should have been a botanist and her love of all things to do with a garden came from Aunt Nellie. I think she was very happy out there with Nellie and her husband.
Maude Ruth [Burge] and Nellie [V. Burge] were left behind [they had gotten married] when the family moved back to California with the rest of the daughters. They had left and returned to Texas (pushed through Texas on the way West) because California "was getting too crowded." When they arrived in the Hill Country, it was still pretty open. Mom has lots of stories about growing up and her Grandpa Burge who owned a model T and spit tobacco so that everyone in the back of the car had to duck. . . funny stories. I can't imagine leaving an area as beautiful as Ukiah. Makes one wonder what the story was.
The 1910 Federal Census for Yount, Napa Co., California, District 85 records Addison E. (51 - Iowa/WV/Ohio) and Mary (48 - CA/Tenn/Texas) Burge with children Sadie (25 - Texas), Hattie (16 - Texas), Rodney (14 - Texas), Anne L. (12 - Texas) living on East Oakville Road. Addison is a farmer.
The 1920 Federal Census for Oakville, Napa Co., California, District 66 records Addison E. Burge (59). In the household is his daughter Sadie (35), her husband George Vien (46) and their children George (8) and Margaret (5).
Addison is no longer listed in the 1930 census however the 1930 Federal Census for Yount, Napa Co., California, District 21 records George N. (56) and Sadie I. [Burge] (45) Vien with children George N. Jr. (18) and Marguerite D. (15). George Sr. is born in California and his parents are listed as French Canadian. Sadie is born in Texas, her father in Iowa, and her mother in California. George and Sadie have been married for 20 years. Note: the WWI Draft Registration Card for George Napoleon View (sic) [Vien] records his date of birth as May 25, 1873. He is working for A. E. Burge in Oakville, Napa Co., CA.
