Dr. Carol Skinner

The 1920 United States Federal Census for St. Louis, Missouri, Ward 28, District 593, page 198A records a divorced Carol S. Cole (31 - Wisconsin) with children Carol F. (11 - Illinois) and Charles H. (9 - Missouri). Also in the household is Carol's widowed mother, Caroline Skinner (60 - Ohio/Louisiana/Kentucky). Carol is a student at a Medical School.

The 1930 United States Federal Census for St. Louis, Missouri, Ward 28, District 242, page 240A records a widowed Carol S. Cole (41 - Wisconsin) as a Physician. There are no children at the residence and she reports to have been married at age 17.

The first two women to have entered as a freshmen (in 1918) and to graduate from the Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis) were Mrs. Carol Skinner Cole and Aphrodite Maria Jannopoulo. [Carol Skinner] Cole, who was born in 1888, received her degree in June 1922. After her graduation, Dr. Cole went into practice with her mother, Dr. Caroline Skinner, a homeopath. Dr. Skinner, born in 1858, was a 1897 graduate of the Homeopathic Medical College of Missouri, which was located in St. Louis. Within a few years Dr. Carol Skinner Cole left her mother's practice and specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology in St. Louis. Sometime in the early 1930s, Dr. Cole was killed in the Chesapeake Bay in an accident of a mail plane on which she had been a stowaway, hoping to reach her daughter in the east who was about to have a baby.

Carol married Barzillai Lipscomb Cole, son of Charles B. Cole and Henrietta Adeline (Addie) Blackwell, circa 1905 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., MO. (Barzillai Lipscomb Cole was born on 24 May 1881 in Granville (Now Vance) Co., N.C. and died on 17 Jul 1963 in Missouri.)
