bullet  General Notes:

Research indicates that Deliah Hodges may be the daughter of Carolyn Joyce, not Sarah Ann Corn. There is an indication that Jerry Hodges [Jeremiah B.Hodges] fathered Deliah with Carolyn while married to Sarah. The evidence is as follows:

1st ... Jeremiah Hodges is married twice:
North Carolina marriage records have the following: Jeremiah B. Hodges married to Sarah Ann Corn on March 3, 1853 in Stokes Co., NC. There is a marriage bond between Jeremiah B. Hodges and Caroline Corn recorded on December 31, 1862 in Stokes Co., NC. Census records are consistent with these marriage records:

Jeremiah B Hodges Bride: Carline Joyce Bond Date: 31 Dec 1862 Bond #: 000139361 Level Info: North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
ImageNum: 004382 County: Stokes Record #: 01 144 Bondsman: Sandford Barnes Witness: Joel F Hill

Now for census records that name wives of Jeremiah that are consistent with the above marriage records:
The 1860 United States Federal Census for Stokes Co., North Carolina, Danbury P.O., page 180A records Jerimiah (34 - NC) and Sarah (27 - NC) Hodge (sic) with children Mary (6 - NC), William (4 - NC), Martha (3 - NC), and Susan (2 - NC). Then in 1870, Jeremiah is with Caroline: The 1870 United States Federal Census for Mayo Township, Patrick Co., Virginia, Nettle Ridge P.O., Page 495B records Jeremiah B. (43-VA) and Caroline (36-NC) Hodges with children Billie Lee [William] (14-VA/male), Martha C. (13-VA), Susan V. (10-VA), Armelia F. (7-VA), Jesse C. (5-VA), John A. (4-VA), and James M. (2-VA).
The 1880 United States Federal Census for Snow Creek, Stokes Co., North Carolina, District 248, Page 382B records Caroline Hodges (44-widow) with children Delila (20), Jesse (16), John (13), James (11), Mallissa (8), and Lettie (6). All family members and their parents are born in NC. This is John Ashworth Hodges' family and confirmed in that his son, John Hardin Hodges, indicates on his WWI Draft Registration Card that his place of birth is Sandy Ridge [Stokes Co.], NC. Note that Armelia is Delila who is later inditified as Deliah.

Now we move on to 1944 where the North Carolina Death Certificates record Deliah Hodges Snider ... her death certificate, dated March 20, 1944, states her date of birth as April 15, 1856 in Stokes Co., NC and her parents as Jerry Hodges of Patrick Co., VA and Caroline Joyce of Patrick Co., VA. [The death certificate also names the widowed Deliah's husband as J. S. Snider]
But one might ask, "If this be true, then where is she in the 1860 census?" Well, looking at the 1860 census we find: The 1860 United States Federal Census for Stokes Co., North Carolina, Danbury P.O., page 179A records Perren (54) and Sallie (46) Joyce with children Matilda (26) [this is Caroline Matilda Joyce], Livingston (20), Naoma (16), Tempy (14), David R. (11), Joseph (9), Eliza (6), Delila (4), and Lethia (1). Next door is the Samuel Corn family ... family of Sarah Ann Corn.

It should be noted here that the Delila listed in the 1860 census is living with the Joyce family and is apparently the Delila listed in the 1870 census living with Jeremiah and Caroline Hodges (in spite of the 7 years of age as listed). Thus, one could conclude that Jeremiah had a relationship with Caroline Joyce while married to Sarah Ann Corn Hodges. Perhaps Sarah was ill or even "divorced" Jeremiah; however, this researcher can find no other listing for Sarah ... and thus ... this researcher will conclude that Deliah Hodges' mother is indeed Caroline Matilda Joyce. As far as the father is concerned there is a "family story" related at: http://www.geocities.com/smithsnider/joyce.html
that states "Caroline Maltida Joyce was raped Mr Martin 1 child Delilah Joyce born 4-15-1856 died 3-20-1944".

The 1900 United States Federal Census for Snow Creek Township, Stokes Co., North Carolina, District 100, page 158A, dated June 16, 1900 records Jerry (April 1862 - NC/NC/NC) and Delilah (April 1857 - NC/NC/NC) Snider with their children Laura A. (Feb 1885), Ernest C. (Aept 1886), Tempie J. (Sept 1888), Dora L. (Aug 1899), William H. (April 1892), Maggie L. (Sept 1893), Lemma S. (March 1895), and Samuel N. (April 1897). Jerry is a farmer and has been married to Delilah for 16 years. They have had 8 children all of whom are still living.
