Livingston enlisted as a Private in Company H, 22nd Infantry Regiment North Carolina on 01 March 1863 at the age of 18. He was wounded on 03 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA (Estimated day) and later hospitalized on 15 August 1864 at Richmond, VA (Unspecified complaint). He was captured and became a POW on 03 April 1865 at Appomattox River, VA then confined on 05 April 1865 at Hart's Island, NY Harbor (Estimated day). He took the Oath of Allegiance on 19 June 1865 at Hart's Island, NY Harbor.
