In an email from Violet Nadine Adkins Richards (Deanie) in Dec 2006: The surname of the doctor who delivered my husband was named Judson (surname) so that became my husband's middle name but we call him Jimmie. For some reason, he never liked being called Clarence.

The 1930 Federal Census for Raleigh, Wake Co., NC, Ward 2 (Northern), ED# 36, page 154B records a household of Gladys P. Richards (29 - NC/NC/NC) with the following individuals: Elizabeth Barton (11 - SC/NC/NC), Albert L. Barton (8 - NC/NC/NC), Virginia M. Richards (7 - NC/NC/NC), Clarence J. Richards (5 - NC/NC/NC), and the widowed grandmother-in-law Katherine V. Nipper (64 - NC/NC/NC) renting at 1131 Harp Street. Gladys is listed as married but no husband is present. This is apparently a second marriage for Galdys in that Elizabeth and Albert are listed as her daughter and son as are Virginia and Clarence. Gladys is a Skimmer in a Cotton Mill. (note: scummer instrument is for taking off scum; a skimmer. From Knight's 1880 Mechanical Dictionary - A Scummer is a perforated ladle or dish used in removing feculences [soiled or likely to soil with dirt or grime] from the surface of boiling solutions.)
Note: Katherine V. Nipper is Katherine Virginia (Katie / Kate) Yeargin Nipper. Her father was Wyatt Yeargin and her mother was Susan Glenn of Wake Co., NC. Susan married Wyatt Yeargin in 1865 as his 2nd wife. Kate was their only child. Kate married Hillary Filmore Nipper. Kate and Filmore had a daughter, Minnie H. Nipper (b 1883), who married William F. Richards (b 1877) in 1900. Gladys is either a child or the wife of a child from that marriage.

The 1900 Federal Census for Barton Creek, Wake Co., NC, ED# 123, page 17A, dated June 23, 1900 records a household of Hillary F. (March 1858) and Katie V. (Oct 1866) Nipper with children Minnie H. (Jan 1883), Elvis A. [Anderson] (March 1885), Luther E. [Elodius] (Feb 1887), William F. (Aug 1888), Sallie L. (May 1891), Charles W. (Aug 1897), Lida F. (Aug 1897). Also in the household are widowed mother-in-law Susan Yeargin (1847) and son-in-law William Richards (Sept 1877). William and Minnie have been married for 0 years.

The 1920 Federal Census for House Creek, Wake Co., NC, ED# 111, page 95A, dated January 7, 1920 records a household of Filmore H. (60) and Katie (52) Nipper with daughter Lida Nipper (20). Also in the household are Lida's 2 children Azzie Nipper (7) and Lucy Nipper (5). Lida indicates that she is single. Note: NC Death Certificates indicate the father of AzzieThelma Keith and Mary Louise (not the Lucy above) [Nipper/Keith] Pennington is Martin Van Keith. Turns out that Martin Van Keith was born in January 1883 ... so apparently a 30 year old man took up with a 16 year old girl ... they did eventually marry and have at least another 6 children. Th 1930 Census for Bartons Creek, Wake Co., NC records: Martin V. B. & Lida A. Keith with children Azzie T. (16), Lucy T. (14), Fred B. (11), Ellis M.(9), Marty E. (6), Mary L. (5), Nancy (4), and Joseph V. (1 6/12).
