The 1820 Federal Census for Pittyslvania Co., VA, page 47 records Samuel Meadow as the head of a household with 1 male (>45), 4 males (<10), 1 male (16-26), 1 female (26-45). Samuel has 2 male slaves.

The 1830 Federal Census for Pittyslvania Co., VA, page 369B records Samuel Meadow as the head of a household with 1 male (50-60), 3 males (15-20), 1 male (10-15), 2 males (5-10), 1 female (30-40), 1 female (<5).

The 1840 Federal Census for the Southern District, Pittyslvania Co., VA, page 31 records Samuel Meadow as the head of a household with 1 male (60-70), 1 male (20-30), 1 male (15-20), 1 female (50-60), 1 female (10-15).

The 1850 Federal Census for the Southern District, Pittsylvania Co., VA, Southern District, page 121A records Samuel (79) and Nancy (61) Meadows. Also in the household are John H. Motley (25) and his wife Ann [Meadows] Motley (25). Samuel is a farmer is real estate valued at $2,100 and he owns 2 slaves: 1 female age 13 and 1 male age 7.

The 1860 Federal Census for the Southern District, Pittsylvania Co., VA, Southern District, page 24 records Nancy Meadows (68) living with her son-in-law, John H. Motley (35) and his wife Ann G. Motley (35) and their children. John is an overseer with real estate valued at $0 and a personal estate valued at $500. Nancy Meadows is listed as the owner of 4 slaves while John Motley as the agent for George Harston and has 47 slaves. Obviously John, with a personal estate valued at $500, does not own 47 slaves ... he is an "Overseer" for George Harston [Hairston]. Upon checking the census record one finds George Hairston (38) in the Southern District of Pittsylvania Co., VA, Bachelors Hall P.O. living with his mother Ruth Hairston (77). George has real estate valued at $33,000 and a personal estate valued at $36,500 while his mother Ruth has real estate valued at $139,500 and a personal estate valued at $596,800. Ruth Harston (sic) is listed as the owner of 93 slaves and her son, George, as the owner of 47 ... the sames slaves attributed to John Motley. Ruth owned and lived at the Plantation known as Berry Hill.
