Custis, William Robinson - 1 Sep 1838/25 Nov 1829 - To son Thomas B. Custis the plantation whereon he resides including the land & houses whereon William Kelly, George Tigner & George Bull resides known as Folly Landing containing 600 acres bounded by the north branch of Folly Creek, by the lands of Tully R. Wise Esq., by the land of James W. Twiford which he purchased of the heirs of George W. Barker dec'd, by the lands of Ann Z. Read, by the lands of the heirs of Richard D. Bayly dec'd, by the lands of Solomon Phillips, by the lands of the heirs of Major Hornsby dec'd by the lands of Thomas R. Joynes Esq., by the lands of John W. Custis dec'd, the mill pond called Walkers Mill including said mill & the south branch of Folly Creek. In consideration of the above bequest the said Thomas B. Custis is to pay to Ann T. Copes each year during her life 10 barrels of corn delivered at the house where William Kelly now resides for here dower in part of the plantation where Thomas B. Custis' overseer called West now resides, also Negroes Major with his chest of tools, Jacob, Agnes wife of Jacob, George Copes, Littleton, Lureaser daughter of Keziah, Rachel daughter of Sarah, Keziah, old Sarah, Tom son of Rachel & ... & also the lot in the corner of the office & court house lot whereon the tailors shop of Mr. Demock at present stands, also the lot & house where a Mr. Purnell resides which formerly belonged to Harriet Barker, also the land I purchased of Mary Selby containing about 1/4 acre & bounded by John Hargis &c, also Jim Young & ... To my daughter Ann R. Custis the plantation & mill with improvements which I purchased from the Extr. of John C. Copes dec'd, which I had a mortgage on from the said John C. Copes containing 300 acres bounded by the lands of the heirs of Col. Henry Custis dec'd, Tully R. Wise Esq., the county road, Henry Bishop &c, also the plantation whereon Edward Lewis resides containing 250 acres bounded by the county road leading to Onancock, the lands of William Budd, the lands of John Bull, the lands of the heirs of William Fox dec'd, the lands of Cato Poolman (Free Negro) the county road leading to the new church as formerly called the lands of the heirs of Nathaniel Lang & the lands of William Parramore, Jr., also Negroes Harriet, daughter of Hannah, Agnes & child, daughter of Ditto, Lewis, son of Ditto, Henry son of Rachel, Isaac son of Keziah, George son of Mary, Ben son of Nanny, Flower daughter of Leah, Jim son of Leah & also ... & if Ann R. Custis dies before age 21 or without a will, Elishea A. D. Custis & William H. B. Custis is not to inherit from her one cent in any way or manner, except as regards those two individuals. Parramore his late wife, the lands of the heirs of Richard D. Bayly dec'd, the lands of the heirs of John Snead dec'd, the lands of Bowdoin Snead & the lands of Thomas Bull; also Negroes Eli, Sarah daughter of Leueaser, Easther daughter of Keziah & granddaughter to Keziah, Charles son of Leueaser, Tabby daughter of Hannah, Edmund & Henry sons of Easter, Ebbey daughter of Leah, Moses, Jacob son of Leueaser, also ... & if Mary R. To my granddaughter Margaret A. Custis (under age 21), daughter of my son John W. Custis dec'd, $3,334 & ... that I purchased at her father's sale that belonged to his first wife & Negroes Betsey daughter of Nanny, Mary daughter of Nanny, John son of Nanny & Harry to remain in the hands of her uncle Thomas B. Custis until the death of her mother & Thomas B. Custis to be her guardian. Son Thomas B. Custis to purchase a suitable slab or tomb stone of sufficient length & breadth to cover the grave of my son John W. Custis dec'd at a price not to exceed $300-400 & the one sent by his wife never be put on him as it is not long enough by 9 or 12 inches to cover him & that it was sent more for pomp then utility. To my granddaughter Sally Parramore, daughter of Elizabeth C. Parramore, Negro girl Kitty daughter of Esther & $200. To my grandson William Parramore, son of my daughter Elizabeth C. Parramore, the lots & houses where Demock the tailor, James Marshall & Bagwell Topping resides bounded by the lot of Dr. Young, Edmond Allen, the heirs of Elisha Davis, the road to Drummond Town & the cross street leading by the land of Thomas R. Joynes' Tavern house; also 20 acres I purchased of William Custis of Henry & wife; also Negro boy George Bloxom; & $200. To my grandson Thomas Parramore, son of daughter Elizabeth C. Parramore, the lot &c bounded by the tavern lot of Thomas R. Joynes, the lot of Mrs. Jane Bayly, the heirs of Richard D. Bayly, the heirs of Fenwick Fisher & the road to the New Church formerly called; also the land to the westward of the road leading to Onancock that I purchased of McKeel Budd & bounded by said Bayly & Sukey Hornsby; also Negro boy Bill son of Nanny; & $200. To my granddaughter Betsey Parramore, daughter of my daughter Elizabeth C. Parramore, Negroes Sarah daughter of Nanny & $200. To the grandchild of mine that William Parramore Jr. may give the land called the meeting house field, lying in the fork of the road leading to Onancock & also land in the corner or adjoining the Methodist meeting house lot & Ann T. Read. To my grandson John Custis, son of Thomas B. Custis, Negro boy Isaac son of Nanny & $200 & that his father be his guardian without giving security & make the best of his hire & interest until he is 21 of age & then pay it to him. To my daughters Ann R. & Mary R. Custis ... & $500 (a piece) & if Ann R. & Marry R. Custis die before age 21 or without a will, Elishea A. D. Custis & William H. B. Custis is not to inherit from them one cent that ever belonged to me, as regards those two individuals & it is my wish that neither of you every have any thing to do with either of them during your lives & as soon as you are the proper age that you make a will & never be without said will, that will to keep them from inheriting any property that ever belonged to me. Elishea A. D. Custis ought to clear her seal of the charges made against her by the Norfolk lady before any body of respectability has any thing to do with her. I again say Elishea A. D. Custis & William H. B. Custis are not to have any property that ever belonged to me in any way or manner. To my son Thomas B. Custis Negro woman Nanny, $2,000 & ... & Peter the overseer. To Susannah M. Custis one of the daughters of my first wife who ran off with a Puppy called James Parramore, provided she survives him, the amount of damages & cost which Levin Rodgers recovered from me &c & which I paid to Gent. Severn E. Parker for said Rodgers. To granddaughter Sally Parramore, daughter of my daughter Eliza C., ... that was my second wife's & ... To my grandson William Parramore, son of my daughter Eliza C., the gun I purchased of George East & the remaining 1/2 of my land in the state of Ohio. To my son Thomas B. Custis, my daughter Ann R. Custis, my daughter Mary R. Custis, the children of my daughter Elizabeth C. Parramore the share that she would be entitled to if she was living at the time of my death & to the child of my son John W. Custis the share that he would be entitled to if he was living at the time of my death, the balance to them without sale. The share or part which Ann R. Custis & Mary R. Custis is entitled to is given them upon the same terms as the property in the other clauses of this will, that is if Ann R. Custis or Mary R. Custis or either of them dies before age 21 or without a will, Elishea A. D. Custis & William H. B. Custis is not in any event to inherit from them one cent that ever belonged to me or mine. The share which the daughter of my son John W. Custis is entitled to is to remain in the hands of her uncle Thomas B. Custis until the death of her mother & the property still to remain in his hands until the child of my son John W. Custis called Margaret A. Custis is 21 of age ... Son Thomas B. Custis to be guardian to my daughters Ann R. & Mary R. Custis & he is not to give security for said guardianship ... Son Thomas B. Custis Extr. & that he quality without giving any security. Witt: Levin Core & Bagwell Taylor. Prob: Proved by the oath of Levin Core, a witnesses thereto & Tully R. Wise, Henry A. Wise & William Z. Joynes who made oath that they were well acquainted with the handwriting of said William R. Custis. Thomas B. Custis, the named Extr., being dead, William Paramore Jr. became the Admr. & gave $150,000 bond with Thomas R. Joynes, Thomas H. Bayly & Thomas Lilliston securities. - 1828-46 w, p. 315
