The 1860 Federal Census for Northern District, Museville Post Office, Pittsylvania Co., Va. page 179 records William Adkins (49) (indexed as Askins at ancestry.com) with wife Lucy (53) and daughter Mary (27). Next door is Louisa Kendrick and her children by William's brother, Owen. William has real estate valued at $ 6,000 and a personal wealth of $20,200 including 19 slaves.

The 1880 census for Pittsylvania Co., Va. records William and his sister Mary living in the same household next to his sister Permillia and his father, Owen. The 1880 Federal Census for Callands, VA, District 64, page 50A records William (69) and Mary (60) Atkinds. This appears to be the "William Adkins" who was married to "Lucy Adkins" as recorded in the 1850 and 1860 census records. At that time, Mary was living with the couple who apparently had no children. In 1850 there is another "William Adkins" living in the area. He is listed as 55 years of age and is married to Ritta (54) and is living next to his brother Owen. This William has "Sr." next to his name while the other has "Jr.", however, I believe they are uncle and nephew and the suffex is generational not literal. One thing is for sure, many of the "Adkins" family members are repetedly listed through the 1880 census records as "can not read or write" and they often have inconsistent reporting as to their ages in succeeding census reports.
