Diphtheria’s Death Roll
In the vicinity of Red Hill, Martic township, diphtheria prevails to an alarming extent. Jacob Lewis buried two children; Maris Reese one; George Hickey fears the loss of three and the closing of the schools has been seriously considered.

see notes on his daughter, Orella, for 1900 census facts. Maris continues to live in Martic Township through the 1920 census where he is listed as employed as a rigger at the power house.

The 1850 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA, page 126B records Jacob Reese [father of Maris] (17) living with his parents Martin (50) and Ann (50) [Anna Nancy Miles] Reese and siblings Lewis (15), Esther (12), and John B. (8). Martin is a Stone Mason.

The 1860 Federal Census for Providence Township, Lancaster Co., PA, New Providence P. O., page 612 records Maris N. Reese (2) in the household of Jacob and Catherine Reese. These ar most likely the parents of Maris. Also in the household what appears to be two uncles and the grand father of Maris: Jacob Reese (26), Catherine Reese (20), Maris Reese (2), Martin Reese (60 - PA), Lewis Reese (22), and John B. Reese (19). Martin is a Master Mason while Jacob is listed as a Mason. It appears that Martin continues to live in Providence because he is listed as aged 80 amd married to a 32 year old Rachael in the 1880 census.

By 1870, Maris, his parents, and siblings move to Martic Township: the 1870 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Bethesda P. O., page 4B records Maris Reece (sic) (12) with his parents Jacob (37) and Catherine (30) and brothers John (8) and Charles (2). Jacob is a store keeper.

The 1880 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA, District 169, page 390A records Jacob (46) and Catherine (40) Reece (sic) and sons John (17) and Charles (11). Jacob is a merchant and farmer. Maris Reece (23) is one page over (389B) in the census married to Jennie (21) and has a daughter, Bertha Reece (7/12 - Dec) in the 1880 census. Maris married Jennie. (Jennie was born circa 1859 in Pennsylvania and died circa 1890 in Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA.)
