Texanna "Texie" G. Saunders, Letter, 26 April 1864, from Captain Samuel D. Preston (1834-1888). Samuel Preston Davis was born 20 July 1834 near Lynchburg, Virginia, to Pleasant Preston (1803-1856) and Ann E. Davis Preston (d. 1891). When the Civil War began, Preston enlisted in the 34th Virginia Infantry and became captain of Company C. He served for a time as Judge Advocate. Preston was wounded in the head in fighting around Peterburg, Virginia, 30 July 1864. He was put on detached service in December 1864. Preston was paroled at Lynchburg, Virginia, 15 April 1865. After the war, Preston settled in Lynchburg and became a lawyer. He married Texanna "Texie" G. Saunders (b. ca. 1840) 5 December 1861, and they had at least five children. Preston died in Lynchburg 15 April 1888, and was buried in Presbyterian Cemetery.
