  General Notes:

The 1910 Federal Census for Holy Neck Magisterial District of Nansemond Co., VA, District 12, page 158B, dated May 2, 1910 records Judson J. West (65) with his wife Mariah L. West (40) and children Hilliard West (23), Judson L. (17), Jacob W. West (15), and Hudson A. West (12). This is the 2nd marriage for Judson and first for Mariah. Judson and Mariah both indicate they were first married at age 25. Mariah reports having had 7 children all of whome are still living ... this is a bit inconsistent with her marriage of 15 years [40 - 25 = 15 ... one would think that all 7 children would be living at home. Apparently Mariah is really 50 years of age and married at age 25 means she has been married for 25 years.

The 1920 Federal Census for Holy Neck Magisterial District of Nansemond Co., VA, District 19, page 204A, dated June 20, 1920 records Judson J. West (66) with his wife Maria L. West (61) and Hudson West (18). This age of Mariah is more consistent with what this researcher believes to be Mariah's actual date of birth.

The 1880 Federal Census for Holy Neck Magisterial District of Nansemond Co., VA, District 54, page 89A, dated June 14, 1880 records J. J. West (25) with his wife Lucy A. [Creecy] West (24) and daughter Martha C. West (7/12 - Nov)


Lucy married Judson on December 26, 1878 ...
Mariah married Judson on April 29, 1884 in Nansemond Co., VA ... this resercher doubts that Mariah was 14 years old at her marriage, thus, with all the above considerations, this researcher believes Mariah is the Mariah listed in the 1860 and 1870 census records and must be born ca 1860, not the 1870 as described on her headstone. Also, the Lula Howell buried at the Holland Cemetery must be Mariah's little sister, Mary L. Howell, born in 1870 ... see general notes on their mother.
