Harry McClenaghan

  General Notes:

The first definitive document for Harry McClenaghan is the 1880 census shown below; however, other records for what appear to be this family are found in Lancaster Co., PA in earlier census documents. This researcher believes that the documents below (1860 & 1870 census records) are for our Harry McClenagahn's family and that his father is Robert McClenaghan, son of Robert and Mary McClenaghan, who were born in Ireland. With that in mind, one can find an immigration arrival record for Robert McClenaghan: from Philadelphia Passenger Lists, 1800-1945, dated January 24, 1853 on the ship Florida in the port of Philadelphia coming from Liverpool: Robert McClanagan (28 - Ireland), Mary McClanagan (28 - Ireland), John McClanagan (7 - Ireland), James McClanagan (3 - Ireland), and Charles McClanagan (Infant - Ireland). They are all listed as "Laborer" for occupation.


The 1860 Federal Census for Little Britain Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Kirks Mills P. O., page 639B, dated June 18, 1860 records Robert McCleinghan (sic) (38 - Ireland) and his wife Mary (39 - Ireland) with their children John (15 - Ireland), James (10 - Ireland), Charles (8 - Scotland), Robert (6 - Scotland), Mary J. (4 - PA), and Sarah A. (1 - PA). Robert is a farm laborer.

Apparently, by 1870, Robert's wife has passed away and the family is dispersed. The 1870 Federal Census for Little Britain Township, Lancaster Co., PA, page 450B, dated August 1870 records Robert McClenaghan (48 - Ireland) living in the household of Enos (25) and Mary E. (25) Marsh. Also in the household is William Fawks (21).
The next page of this census record (page 451A) has daughter, Sarah A. McClenaghan (11), living as a Domestic in the home of Jacob (47) and Rebecca (47) Riggs while on page 454B is son Robert McClenaghan (16 - PA) living in the household of Rebecca Runner (50).
The 1870 Federal Census for Colerain Township, Lancaster Co., PA, May P. O., page 97B, dated August 15, 1870 records John (30 - PA) and Mary (26 - PA) McClenaghan.

The 1880 Federal Census for Little Britain Township, Lancaster Co., PA, District 180, page 599B, dated June 8, 1880 records Harry McCleningam (sic) (8 - PA/unknown/PA) living with his widowed grand father Robert McCleningam (sic) (56 - Ireland/Ireland/Ireland). Also in the household is Robert's daughter, Sallie McCleningam (sic) (21 - PA/Ireland/Ireland). Robert is a farm laborer.

The 1900 Federal Census for Colerain Township, Lancaster Co., PA, District 5, page 67B, dated June 9, 1900 records Harry (May 1872 - PA/PA/PA) and Anna (July 1879 - PA/PA/PA) McCleneghan with their daughter, Lena (Oct 1898). Harry is a Railroad Track Worker and has been married to Anna for 2 years. They have had one child.

The 1930 Federal Census for Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., PA, District 50, page 72A, dated April 13, 1930 records the widower Harry McCleneghan (55 - PA/PA/PA) as a lodger in the home of Laura Stark (38) at 411 Church Street. Harry is a Fireman at a Theater.

There is a Harry McClenaghan listed on the 1825 Tithe Applotments for the Parish of Termonmaguirk in the County Tyrone, Townland of Bancran (Northern Ireland)

Harry married Annie M. circa 1898 in Lancaster Co., PA. (Annie M. was born in Jul 1879 in Pennsylvania and died after 1920 in Lancaster Co., PA.)
